Unplug the power cable for the router from the power source. Unplug the power cable for the modem from the power source. Some modems have a backup battery. If you unplug the modem and lights stay on, remove the battery from the modem. Wait at least 30 seconds or so. If you had to remove the battery from the modem, put it back in.
Right click the network icon in your taskbar tray -> Click "Open Network and Sharing Center" -> Then click "Change Adapter Settings" on the left. When you advance to the adapter list, right click your WIFI adapter and make sure it is enabled.

In the Device Manager, double-click the "Network adapters" node, right-click your Wi-Fi driver and choose "Disable device." Wait for a few seconds, and then right-click your Wi-Fi driver again and choose "Enable device." Now, check if the Wi-Fi option appears. If not, continue with the guide.
If troubleshooting your network adapter doesn't solve the problem, overwriting the drivers installed by Microsoft with the original Manufacturers Drivers probably will.
The wrong option and you'll have trouble detecting the wireless network. Important note: Windows 8.1 updates remove WPA. WPA uses TKIP encryption, WPA2 uses AES, but can also use TKIP for compatability (it can accept WPA connections). So the best approach to this is to select a different encryption type in your laptops adapter settings.
